Toadstools and Mushrooms in Lawns

A Common but Curious Lawn Visitor
Toadstools and mushrooms are a regular sight in healthy lawns. While their sudden appearance can seem alarming, they're often a sign of rich microbial activity beneath the surface. But not all fungal growth should be ignored—some patterns may hint at underlying lawn issues like Fairy Rings.

What Are They and Should You Worry?

These are the fruiting bodies of fungi that naturally occur in the soil. Most are harmless and can even benefit the ecosystem. However, proper identification is essential—some varieties are toxic, so we advise against handling or eating them.

If mushrooms are forming circular patterns, this may indicate a Fairy Ring, which requires a different approach. Learn more on our dedicated Fairy Ring page.

Managing Mushrooms in Your Lawn

Before mowing, gently remove any mushrooms using a rake or stiff brush. Mowing over them can spread spores and increase future growth.

We’ve found that regular lawn care—especially Aeration and Scarification—can reduce the frequency of mushrooms year on year. Their presence often follows a sudden shift in weather (e.g. from dry/cold to warm/wet), which activates fungal spores.

Fungicides aren’t effective here. While they may treat visible fruiting bodies, they won’t touch the source beneath the surface.
