Summer Tips for your Lawn

Summer is the best time of year to make the most of your garden. From those tasty BBQs, and birthday parties, to those long afternoons of sunbathing under the sun, we certainly want to take advantage of our gardens during the warmer months. But this warmer and drier weather can be a demanding time for your lawn. The ever-changing weather patterns of the UK can cause our grass to become stressed, so we must ensure we take extra care of our lawns during the summer months.
So here are our top tips for achieving the best-looking lawn for the moments that matter this summer.

Mow your lawn
Check the condition of your mower before mowing your lawn. Ensure the blade is kept sharp and clean and check the lawn for any leaves or remaining debris to avoid damage to your mower. When mowing your lawn, it is essential to remember not to cut your lawn too short, or to cut more than a quarter of the blade in one go – this can stress the grass plant and can lead to an increase in weeds, pests, as well as the risk of lawn disease.
Water your lawn

Follow a regular watering regime for your lawn to keep it hydrated, especially during dry periods. Watering your lawn correctly is critical to achieving the greenest lawn, so it’s important to get it right.
•    Earlier in the morning or later in the evening are the best times to water.
•    Water in short intervals of about 15-20 minutes, let the water soak in, then turn the sprinkler back on for another 15-20 minutes
•    If the lawn doesn’t dry out between watering, stretch the intervals in between. If the water doesn’t get deep enough, apply a little more at each watering, but water less often.

Shaded Lawns
Those shaded spots on your lawn require extra attention. Without enough sunlight, the grasses can deteriorate, becoming less resilient, and more prone to disease. What’s more, those grasses will compete for moisture with the tree roots, so it’s even more important that these areas are given extra care. To deal with shade on your lawn, it’s best to cut lawns in shade less frequently and to no lower than 2 inches.
