FORMER HEAD greenkeeper Mark Tunstall and his wife Lorna launched the GreenThumb franchise in Perth and East Fife in October 2005 and when the opportunity arose in 2012, extended their area to include the Dundee branch of GreenThumb and now treat lawns from Montrose to Glenrothes, Auchterarder to Crail and Pitlochry to Leven.
The office, based in Inchture, is ideally located in the centre of this area and they have built up an excellent team of fully trained operatives and office staff, who are always on hand to help and advise on how best to maintain your lawns.
As the territory covered is so diverse, the team have experienced all types of lawn conditions - from the pure sandy soils of East Fife and East Angus to the nutrient rich farmlands of Angus and Perthshire and are able to give appropriate treatments and advice as necessary. While the team are out and about visiting customers they are regularly stopped and asked for advice and prices from neighbours who also want their lawn treated, which is the best type of new sale; in fact most of the firm's business growth comes from customer referrals. Every customer benefits from four annual treatments, each scheduled at 10 weekly intervals and tailored to target the appropriate conditions of the season, which costs less per customer than the cost of purchasing and applying DIY lawn products themselves.
There are also additional treatments that customers can benefit from including water conservers, fungicides, aeration, scarification and even dealing with those pesky leatherjackets!
The best reward for the team is to watch a lawn transform from a poor condition into a lush, weed free garden to be proud of, which can be summed up by a recent comment a customer sent in via letter:
"I am just writing to say how pleased I am with the results of the lawn treatments you are using. The lawns are in excellent condition and I also think it is excellent value for money. You have achieved in one year what I have been trying to achieve, ineffectively, for the past eight, that is getting rid of the clover on the front lawn! Excellent!"
Lorna says: "If that is not proof that this treatment works then I don't know what would be."
