Alastair Watt set up the Moray Firth franchise in 2006 after a 20 year career as a hospital manager, including 10 years at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, and has never looked back. He describes his area as “50 miles in any direction” from Inverness, it means treating lawns in several different climate zones – from the balmy ‘banana belt’ of the Moray coast to the freezing winters of Strathspey.
There are now 4 staff and the franchise treats 1,000 lawns. The biggest problem he is asked to tackle is moss, and is fully occupied in the winter months scarifying lawns. Interestingly though, in the Moray Firth area there is also a significant incidence of lichen, a scaly/silvery fungus which although little understood, can usually be eradicated by hollow-core tining, or aerating with a machine. Also common in damp climates is another fungal disease called Red Thread, a summer condition causing patches of lawn to turn brown and dried out looking.
The former hospital manager, who worked in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness, loves the area. He says: “Travelling around my territory is a delight as wildlife is everywhere. I often pull into a lay-by for my coffee and to watch the seals and dolphins. There can’t be many other territories where you can have all that, not to mention the magnificent scenery and the friendly people I meet.”
"For a number of years our lawn has been kept in excellent health by Alastair and Fiona with only four visits a year."
"I started with GreenThumb last year and they have made such a huge improvement to my grass in no time and so reasonably priced. I would happily recommend them"
"Orion have used GreenThumb for a few seasons now at Orion House and have always found them to be very professional."
