GreenThumb Frequently asked questions

Got Lawn Care questions? We’ve got the answers!

Some questions get asked more frequently than others, we’ve listed the most common below. If you have a question that’s not listed, then please locate and contact your local branch, who’ll be happy to assist you.

When can I start using GreenThumb?

You can adopt our services at any time of the year. There is never a ‘bad time’ to start improving your lawn.

Do I have to be at home when you come and treat my lawn?

The majority of our customers are not at home when we call. Since all our vehicles and Lawn Operatives are self-sufficient, we can carry out your treatments as long as we have access to the lawns.

If you would prefer to be in when we are treating your lawn, we will do our best to accommodate your request.

I have children and /or pets. What should I be aware of?

We recommend that you keep off the lawn until any liquid part of the treatment has dried (approx. 2 hours). This stops it being walked off. And this is especially true of our NutraGreen Autumn Long Treatment, we recommend that you keep off the lawn for more than 2 hours then as it could stain a carpet or wooden floor, if it were walked into the home.

Grazing pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs should be kept off the lawn for a minimum of two weeks or three cuts, whichever occurs latest, to avoid ingestion of Ragwort, in particular, which becomes poisonous to them as it dies back.

Do I have to sign a contract?

No, we want our customers to continue with GreenThumb based on our merits in creating a healthier, greener lawn for them - not because they are stuck in a contract. Of course, with our treatment programmes, you will need to sign a Direct Debit Mandate with the relevant T&C's which relate to this payment option.

I think my lawn is beyond repair. Can GreenThumb save it?

Very likely. GreenThumb's bespoke treatments are designed to reinvigorate your lawn. It’s likely you’ll be amazed. It’s very rare for us to come across a lawn which is beyond saving. If it is then our GreenThumb Makeover will be the answer.

How long will it take for my lawn to improve?

Following a seasonal treatment you will notice the weeds dying and the grass greening up within a couple of weeks.

Do your treatments really cost less than DIY or my gardener doing it?

Yes, very likely, and our NutraGreen feeds typically have twice the nutritional value, and last longer than store brought granular feeds or what a gardener can get hold of.

Why should I use GreenThumb rather than one of your competitors?

Exclusively for our customers, NutraGreen feeds are manufactured to our specifications based on decades of experience and millions of treatments. Our competitors buy ‘on the shelf’ products from distributors. Our treatments are carried out by around 1000 ‘local to you’ men and women who build our national reputation by providing great service. Each treatment we apply is tailored to each lawn, every time.

If you want the best in lawn treatments and don’t mind paying a pound or two extra for the best. Then you should choose GreenThumb rather than one of our competitors.

Are Lawn Treatments good for the environment?

The purpose of Lawn Treatments is to improve lawn density, healthy turf and reduce weeds. Lawns are great for the environment. Grass is highly efficient in turning carbon dioxide into oxygen. A healthy 230 sq.m lawn produces enough oxygen for a family of 4. Healthy lawns are great feeding grounds for birds.

Lawns offset 50% solar heat through cooling evaporation. It’s like natural air conditioning on a hot day. When it comes to applying weedkillers. We only apply when weeds are visible. We avoid the ‘blanket approach’ adopted by others.

How do GreenThumb take a responsible approach to the environment?

Healthy lawns are fantastic to the environment. At times to get a healthy lawn we have to address lawn problems. We only apply a weedkiller where there is a weed. Our Lawn Makeover is an outstanding example of our dedication to sustainability and the use of organic and recycled products. Have a look at it.

Do I have to water my lawn after treatments?

No. Regular watering does help maintain a healthy lawn though.

Should I mow the lawn before you treat it?

We recommend that you don't cut your lawn for 3 days either side of any treatment. This is to ensure that we can see the weeds and the treatment of them has a couple of days to reach the roots.

Any advice on lawn mowing?

We have a whole section dedicated to mowing, click here to check it out.

How long should my grass clippings be composted before it is okay to use them?

With most standard treatments we recommend a minimum of 6 months preferably 12. There are some treatments where we would ask you to dispose of the clippings in a different way for the first 3 cuts, these are generally one off treatments and we would advise at the time of the treatment.

Is GreenThumb licensed to treat lawns?
