Lawn Care Tips
Mowing
Correct mowing practices are the best way of ensuring a healthy lawn. Cutting at the correct height encourages healthier roots, helps conserve water during dry periods, and ensures the grass plant remains healthy, whilst at the same time discouraging weeds.
Cutting the lawn too short (scalping) does not prevent grass from growing quickly; in fact cutting your lawn too short can encourage lawn diseases, moss and weed growth.
- Never cut your lawn less than 25mm (1 inch). Ideally the grass should be left at between 1 and 2 inches, depending on the current weather conditions.
- Try not to cut more than one third of the total height of the grass plant in one go.
- Choose the correct lawnmower for your lawn. Cylinder mowers are only really suitable for perfectly flat lawns with finer grass types. Please feel free to consult one of our experts prior to buying your new mower.
- Keep your lawnmower regularly serviced – a good cut requires sharp blades.
- Always try to remove grass clippings from the lawn – these clippings encourage lawn thatch, on which moss will thrive.
- Don’t fill the mower with petrol while you are on the lawn – spilling fuel on the grass will scorch the grass plant.
- If you are using an electric mower, use a circuit breaker and be very careful not to run over the wire.
Watering
If your lawn is suffering from drought stress (yellow and brown patches), you can help rescue it by following a few simple steps:
- Keep off the lawn as much as possible as the grass will be dry and brittle and liable to break.
- Do not cut shorter than 50mm (2”) and do not cut again until there is a sign of growth.
- Water twice a day until there is sufficient moisture in the soil to help the grass to recover.
- Do not stop having GreenThumb come to treat the lawn. When the rain finally comes recovery will be quicker.
- Ideally, water the lawn early in the morning or during the late part of the day when evaporation is at its lowest.
- Why not consider installing a water butt for this purpose - don’t forget to make sure it has a child-proof lid.
- Fork the worst areas to help the water to get to where it is needed most – the root zone.
- For large lawns, look for a company that will fit an irrigation system.
